Written about conflict between behavior and beliefs.
I want to be free
But what does that mean?
We are all slaves to something:
To pleasure
To a career
To God
I want to be free
But can one be free
And live?
Death, it's true,
Is the ultimate escape,
But how does that profit anyone?
I want to be free
But it seems
That to want freedom
Is to want the impossible:
A privilege desired by all
And held by none.
I want to be free
But free from what?
The same tiresome bonds
Shared by all humanity.
Why should I be so special?
The freedom we Americans claim
Really means responsibility
Having to take care of ourselves.
How nice, then, to know that God
Will care for me
As He promised in His word,
But for a price--
To turn from my ways
And follow His.
I want to be free
From choices like this.
I want to be free
From this aching inside.
I want to be free
To live my own life
The way I want to be
Without feeling pressured
To meet expectations
And make grades
And do all the things
I'm told I should do.
I want to be free
Because so often
Whether I do "right" or "wrong"
I feel empty inside,
Like it didn't matter,
Like the other choice
Would have been better.
I want to be free
From doubts and regrets
And to be free
All I must do
Is
Let
Go.
