An awkward discussion with my seven year old.
The wonderful mind of the young

Raising children is the most eventful job I ever had. Once you’re a parent that’s what you are twenty-four hours a day seven days a week, for the rest of your life. It has its serious moments, sad moments, happy moments, frustrating moments, moments you never want to let go of, and moments you don’t ever want to relive again. I have had my fair share of these moments and more with my having children ranging from fifteen to three years old. But nothing compares to the moment when I had to have a sort of sex education talk with my seven year old daughter.

My fiancé and I decided to go for a walk since it was such a nice night out. The children were all laying in the family room watching “Look Who’s Talking”, one of our favorite movies. While the adults were gone, my seven year old saw something on the movie that made her think. She asked my fifteen year old “before I was in mommy stomach, where did I come from?” My oldest daughter laughed because she didn’t know if she should or how she should answer the question for her little sister. My seven year old begged her to give her the answer because she really wanted to know. “Before you were in mommy stomach you were in your daddy’s balls” my fifteen year old told her. Crystal, the seven year old, twisted her face all up in disgust. “That is so nasty, why didn’t they ever tell me that?” she said with complete displeasure. “I think you should wait for your parents to get back and talk to them about that because I don’t want to tell you something that they don’t want you to hear yet.” Morgan, my oldest daughter, told her.

My fiancé and I got back about an hour later; Crystal was sitting there waiting on us with a very angry look on her face. “Daddy I am so mad at you! Why didn’t you tell me that I was in your thingy-ma-bobby?” Crystal yelled at her daddy. “What are you talking about, what thingy-ma-bobby were you in?” My fiancé asked clueless as to what she was talking about. Crystal went on to explain how they were watching the movie and so she asked Morgan where did she come from before she got to my stomach and how Morgan said she was in his balls first. We were in total shock, we didn’t know whether to laugh or be angry, but we knew we had to sit down and really explain to her how that process worked. I just couldn’t believe that she was ready for that conversation already. I didn’t know children her age put that much thought into how they got here.

Once the whole process was explained to her, she felt a little better. “You still could have told me that a long time ago.” Crystal said to her father. We all laughed about it and I realized that my child has a very inquisitive mind and I knew that was the first of many awkward conversations to come. Later that night my younger sister and her boyfriend stopped by on their way out for a romantic evening. Crystal asked my sister’s boyfriend “why do you have on one of those suits you wear to honorals?” We were confused. “What is a honoral Crystal?” I asked her. “It’s where you go to honor the dead people.” She said. I didn’t want to correct her because it did make sense. We all laughed again, I decided to leave that conversation for another day.
