Matthew and his grandma had each other. What she forgot, he remembered for both of them.
“Millie, your grandson is here.” The nurse turned and disappeared inside.

The eighty-eight year-old spotted him walking toward the nursing home porch.

“Matthew, so glad you could come. My how you’ve grown.”

“But Grandma I…” He stopped. “Would you like to go for a walk?”

“Not too far!” Yelled the nurse from a nearby window.

Matthew waved.

“Matthew, it’s like you read my mind. How strange.”

“Let me help you up.”

With a modest effort, he lifted his grandmother’s frail frame. She wrapped her arm inside his and they began to walk. The street light popped on in the still of the evening.

“We’ll just go for a few blocks.”

“That would be lovely. How is your father? I don’t get to see him much.”

“Dad is fine, Grandma.” He closed his eyes and his mind wandered to the sight of his gravestone. He held back a tear. “Let’s walk by the school.”

“Oh, yes. I love to see the children swing.”

“I do too. I went to that school you know.”

“I would have loved to see you play. They even have a little trail for them to go on.”

Matthew nodded. His mind wandered to Millie pushing him in those very swings. He squinted to see the plaque in the middle. He knew what it said ”The Millie St. Clair play area”. The swings lay empty. They swayed in the breeze.

Millie smelled the soft sweet lilacs along the fence row. “Those are my favorite.”

“I know.”

They progressed down the street and turned around. Millie smiled sweetly several times as the last of the sun’s rays dipped behind a towering oak. Matthew helped her inside the door.

The nurse came out. “How’d she do?”

“Very well. She really enjoyed the lilacs this time.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”
