September 11 a day that changed us all
The enemy hit our heart today
And fear filled every soul
We’re forever changed, naivete lost
With the twin devastation as the goal.

The enemy that struck us had no face
But the intent was crystal clear
Showering blood, flesh, rubble below
On humanity scrambling with fear.

I watched in horror from my haven
Then gasped as I realized there’s no safe place
Breaths coming fast, choking back sobs
Disbelief on my grief-stricken face.

All we could do is say prayers
To whatever deity and ask how?
How could we be caught so unaware
With most of our defenses down?

Weeping for my unknown neighbors
Feeling every loss as if my own
No words of encouragement will erase the unease
But I hope they know they’re not alone.

So now I sit in stunned silence
The innocence I had I feel no more
Dreading the night, intensely afraid of
the merciless enemy at the door.
