The final version of a story about natives who lived long ago in North & Cent. America.
The Natives Of The Far West

A very long time ago, before there were Vikings or Romans or even Aztec,  Incas or Mayans, there were the natives of the far west. They called themselves Wilotani, which in their language meant, people of the earth. A peaceful and proud people, but fiercely protective of their lands. They were tall, about eight feet for the most part with dark greenish brown skin with light tan areas. Perfect for hiding in the woods. Their eyes were a deep brown with and intelligent look to them. For they were intelligent. Masters of creating illusion and spells. Only their expertise at healing surpassed this. They were not believers in god or gods. They believed the spirit of their people and the Earth were intertwined, stronger than any other force. They knew of the people of the east, across the big water, and wanted nothing to do with them. If per chance one of the boats from the eastern lands would come near, they would make them see serpents and dragons, and drive them away with fear. Their powers were so strong they could make the invaders believe they had come to the end of the earth.  They would allow no other people to invade their lands. Not even their neighbors from the north, now known as Canada. Their lands stretched from what is Canada today to the tip of Central America. A vast wild land, that was  filled with lakes, rivers, streams, forests and vast mountain ranges. They lived in complete harmony with the earth and other animals, for they knew they were animals too. Here to share the earth and it's riches. Not to despoil it. They did hunt for food and clothing, but would use every bit of the animal, and not hunt for sport. They were food for the animals as well and respected this. It was a mutual sacrifice one for the other. A complete symbiotic relationship.

As I had said before, these were an intelligent people and great observers. They had designed many tools, and even from watching birds soar, had made a sort of hang glider. These were great for keeping watch over their shores. They also had a complete alphabet and a language which consisted not only of words, but sounds and signs. Telepathy was also used to some extent.

Their villages were small and were only on natural clearings. They did not cut down trees for settlement,, nor did they clear land for growing food. They picked the fruit and plants that they needed, but no more.

Once, years ago, they had allowed some of the eastern people ashore without them knowing they were there. They observed these people to see how they treated their lands. They found they were wasteful and disrespectful of the lands and animals. Even the plants they would cut down, for a place to camp instead of finding a clearing. These plants they would just throw aside, just like the leftover parts of the animals they had slain and not used. They urinated and defecated everywhere, even the streams.  The people could not allow this to go on, so they drugged them in their sleep and left them for the animals to eat. No use letting good meat go to waste.

There were many tribes of these people. Usually keeping to themselves, but sometimes meeting each other for trade or feasts. Sometimes the feasts were huge, with many tribes attending, but by the time it was over there was no food wasted. Some was used to feed their pets. The rest was made in to a stew that was eaten later. Most of the tribes stayed where they were, but some from the northern parts of their lands were nomads. They moved depending on the season. These nomad tribes never encroached on the other tribes land without meeting and conferring first. They would trade some of their goods for food, and move on. Never was there any kind of skirmish. The earth was for all their people.

They had never protected their southern border much, since the people down there seemed content to stay where they were. They had everything they needed and had no reason to venture north. The easterners had landed there however, and they were not content. They had no problem with serpents and dragons down there and infested the south. I say infested, because they were like a disease, and started killing off the land and the animals. To them the people there were savages. Not worth the time to become friendly with. Just move in and take over. So they began to move north.

Iodin,  of the southern tribe,  got word of this. Iodin was their leader and magi. A great thinker and philosopher, and he meditated on this. We must stop them before they come any further north. He decided to send his people south, to dig a trench as deep as the abyss of Aranai. They also built one bridge across it. This to lead the easterners into their trap. Deep in the trench grew a disease that the natives were immune to. Even if the easterners made it across the bridge, the disease was carried on the mist upward. They would be sick by the time they reached the other side. Iodins scouts circled above on their hang gliders. Looking like hawks they watched. Watching intently as the easterners fell to their knees, sick and dying. The problem was solved, they thought and returned home.

The easterners, when they found there were no serpents, dragons, or the end of the earth down south had sent word back. The west was theirs, they told their people back east. The savages there were no match for them. Of course, this was before their encounter with the natives of the north.

Aranai, to whom the abyss was named after, was not so sure the problem was solved. He sent a message to Iodin to keep watch of his shores from above. They may have been immune to the disease of the trench, but not the disease of the easterners. The disease being the easterners themselves. Aranai also sent his best illusion makers and spell casters to the middle and northern shores. Watching from above, and hidden on the shores. They did not want to have battle, but pushed to far, they would. Unfortunately they did not see, that if they fought, they were already infected with the easterners ways. Iodin beseech-ed  Aranai not to go to battle. He knew this was the infection they feared, would come to their land. Peace had always been their way. Not war. There had to be another way to stave off the easterners. Aranai took his council, but thought, what can I do? There are so many of them, with many ships. Then the idea struck him. If the spirit of the people and the earth are intertwined then maybe, they could call on the Earth to help them. The seas could be their ally. So with all the powers of his people brought together, they got the seas to rise and make huge waves pushing the easterners from their shores. In fact pushing them back half way across the ocean. They had stopped the easterners without battle or war. Iodin smiled and so did Aranai. They had kept their people from being infected by the easterners, but had learned a lesson about watching the south.

So the people went back to their day to day lives, but still keeping a vigil. They knew the easterners would come back someday, and they would have to repel them again, but for now, there was peace.

Hundreds of years later the easterners did come back, but the Natives of the Far West were gone. No longer the illusions and spells. No longer the seas being turn against them. The people had vanished. Some say they traveled to South America to live in the high mountains, in isolation there. Some say their spirits had actually become one with the earth, and were no longer physical beings. Others say they just died off. No one knows what became of them, but the easterners, now with nothing to hold them back, came in swarms. They took over the lands and called them there own. They desecrated and defiled the lands, and killed off much of the wildlife. They cut down trees for thousands of miles and dug up the land until, in some places, it was just dust. They buried their waste and polluted the waters and the air. They built buildings and roads that covered the lands and left no room for the animals to live. They bred uncontrollably throwing off the balance of the Earth.

It is said that one day the Natives of the West will come to take their lands back. To purify their lands and the Earth. To do away with the easterners and their kind forever, and bring the Earth  back to balance. Once again to be a beautiful and fruitful place to live.

                                                    (Epilogue)

A major earthquake hits Manhattan and it is swallowed up completely in seconds. Another earthquake hits Nevada and the Hoover Dam crumbles like an autumn leaf, flooding the areas below it. Great winds cover the earth and aircraft are tossed from the skies. All power ceases, nuclear and electrical. There are riots in the streets. People hit the stores in droves taking food and water. Any form of people being civilized vanishes. It's every man or woman  for themselves. Clouds form above and rain comes down in torrents. Flooding washes out bridges and roads. Buildings are laid to waste. A loud wail is heard around the planet. The Natives From The West have returned. Destruction of the easterners is eminent. Their deeds have caught up with them. The Earth will shake them off like, so many fleas. The natives are reclaiming their lands, and returning them to the paradise, they once were. Soon the sun comes from behind the clouds, and there is no trace of the easterners. Life begins to flourish immediately. The Earth is coming back to balance. It's as if the easterners never existed. As it should be..
