New introspection
Does it all have meaning?

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust,
to have and to hold,
in sickness and health?

The unexamined life is not worth living,
the pursuit of glorification blinds,
and the faults we see in others
are just a reflection upon ourselves.

There is nothing new
under this sun.
Our progress an illusion
brought about by rearranging
the cast offs of yesterday.

I am alone.
And in my solitude,
I develop strength.
I reflect upon
the world of the moment,
the world of my desire,
the world of my pain.

But mostly, I reflect.

A Carthusian,
locked within his cell
commands his world
with grace and dignity.

A Trappist in the field
moves his hands to God’s plan,
his heart listening to the wind.

And if I have learned,
it is that I know nothing.
My life is cast upon
the waves and the wind,
as I search for home.
