A poem about not losing who I am
Tread gently on this ground,

To my life I am tightly bound.

Don’t tell me who I can be,

When green is all you see.

Don’t take the life I’ve built,

Or stay with me out of guilt.

You knew who I was,

And the things that I loved,

Before you said “I do”,

You loved me like I love you.

When did that change?

We fall in and out of love. It all seems kind of strange.

You vowed to love me for better or worse,

Not to love me, but fix me first.

Empathy is not sympathy,

And loving others is a part of me.

How can you expect me to turn my back,

On the very qualities that brought us together,

is my morality under attack?

In love and love are two different feelings.

I can’t be hard, cold, uncaring and unhealing.

No one else can take your place,

Or in my eyes your manhood disgrace.

The idea of my freedom of emotion,

Is not a competitive notion.

I made my choice when I agreed to be your wife,

Why can’t you accept that it’s you who is my life.

No one can steal my heart away from you,

But you have to learn your own worst enemy is you.
