A free verse poem comparing newfound love to aged love.
Newfound love blazes,
rages out of control,
overwhelming all reason,
bursting into fiery flames
of red-hot passion
demanding quenching
until the next flare-up.

Young love burns hottest,
roaring and sparking,
its flames leaping skyward,
demanding more and more
firewood be sacrificed to it
to keep its fire from consuming
itself and extinguishing
after an outpouring of heat.

Aged love that has lasted
through the decades is
a thick bed of glowing embers,
radiating comforting warmth
and contentment to its recipients,
who know, while it may only
rarely burst into flame, it shall
last the dark night and shall
keep away the chill for all the
winter of their lives.

The pulsating red embers of
aged love are a reliable constant
that warms the inner regions
of one’s mind, heart, and soul,
that never cools and dies until
the deaths of both of the beloved.
Fortunate indeed are those
among the elderly who share
aged love, for it is a never-failing
bastion providing them with
comfort and peace of mind.
