A Lawyer With Morals?

Are you concerned about being able to blend your role as a lawyer with your personal sense of right & wrong? How? Why? Explain.

This is a question that I asked myself before I entered law school, and I ultimately decided that I will be able to adequately incorporate my personal beliefs into my role as a lawyer. If I thought there was any doubt of my ability to do so, I would not have entered this field. My answer has not changed during my five semesters of law school. In fact, I feel more strongly than ever that I can blend the two while acting in the best interests of the clients.

I believe my background in psychology and counseling will be very beneficial in this regard. I learned the importance of being nonjudgmental toward clients and of not imposing my personal values and beliefs upon them. I am able to empathize with a client without allowing pity or my personal experiences to interfere with my ability to be unbiased. I am also able to balance my obligation to the clients to act in their best interests with my obligation to the law, courts, public and myself to act within the bounds of the law and morality.

During my time in law school, I have learned that there is no question that I can cease representation of a client who insists on doing something immoral or illegal. As far as representing an unpopular client, I have no problem doing so, and I will not let my personal beliefs interfere with my representation. I’m not expected to work to make a guilty client appear innocent or to assist a client in breaking the law. My role as a lawyer is to provide every client with the best representation possible in accordance with the law, and I have no doubt that I’ll be able to do just that.
