Original Inspiration

Date Night

My husband and I find ourselves, more often than not, driving to the local food store on a Friday evening.  Perhaps this started because one of us always received a paycheck at the end of the week--well before electronic deposits.  We began calling it ‘Date Night at the Jewel.’

The Rules:  It’s important to select the right shopping cart.  Preferably one without a wobbly wheel.  Remember, it’s a date and we should drive the cart around in style.  First stop is the bakery, then deli, then all the boring necessary food items, such as vegetables we’ll need during the week.  We spend quite a bit of time cruising the aisles.  I read labels, and the hub sighs and taps his foot.  I look for bargains, he is an impulse shopper.  Thank god he has me.  The wine department is our favorite; we both agree to disagree on which bottle to purchase.  Sometimes we buy two.  After all, it is date night.

What ifs....

1)  What if the wife spots her lover with another woman.

The wife is surprised when she comes face to face with her lover at the deli counter.  She is speechless and angry at the same time.  She doesn’t know whether to be polite and introduce him to her husband, all the while glaring at her lover and his date, or simply ignore the situation until later.

2)  What if they walk out with the cart deciding not to pay for the food.

After they conclude their shopping, the couple spend some time in the wine aisle.  Just their luck there is a wine tasting going on.  They are having so much fun sampling wine they decide on a bottle and open it up in the store and guzzle it down.  Finished, they take their cart and walk out the door to their car without paying.  Security soon follows.

3)  What if instead of Eddie seeking escape in their home, it’s a girl named Edie.

Edie is a young girl who has been keeping court in the Keller household unbeknown to them.  On Friday’s when they go shopping, Edie helps herself to items in the house and sells them on eBay.

4)  What if a tornado rips through the store and they are the only two people left behind.

The storm hits sooner than anyone ever expected.  The couple is still grocery shopping when a tornado slams the store.  The roof is removed and everything turns dark.  Debris takes a toll and the couple huddle together.  When it quiets they discover they are the only people to have survived.
