Forbidden Word(s): (none)

[written for the above prompt - but I didn't use it...still, not a half-bad poem]

As a child I had my wishes:
I drove the first stars to distraction.
As I grew older, came the time
to put desires into action.

I wanted adventures – before I ran out of time:
envisioned castles, mountains to climb,
seeing the places I read about:
and the bucket was full ere time ran out.

I wanted to write poetry and books,
wanted to be published; to write a play.
Another check on the life long list
As this is my life now, night and day.

I wanted that prince of storybook fame:
It took four tries, but at last, he came:
Dented armor, a sway-backed steed,
But loves and gives me all I need.

Wishes granted, the stars shine bright,
new wishes born as for more I lust.
There still are stars left in the sky
and together now, we wish in trust.

Together now, we wish to explore
our country from shore to shore
from Old Ironsides to another ship—
USS Missouri in her museum slip.

I want to see the lava flowing,
check out the view from the southern rim,
wander the Lake Superior shore:
but most of all—just to do it with him.

We’ve kids and grands, we have our health
We’re far too young to sit on a shelf.
At night we sit at computers and scheme
Our next journey, our next dream.

But we walk of an evening, and look to the sky.
and I think of all the wishes come true:
I appreciate the traveled paths
And wish, how I wish for others, I do.

Star light, star bright,
first star I see tonight
I wish I may, I wish I might,
have the wish I wish tonight.
