Our childhood shapes our future, even if it ends in a prison graveyard.
Pillars Of Stone

Cold as the frost on pillars of stone
The daisies have wilted, the seasons have flown.
There’s depth in the darkness where sinners are stained
Many-barred fences, but what have we gained?
Sun-drenched lawns where summer waits,
The foot of the pavement, latches on gates;
Laziness lingers in childhood’s wake
Sand walls crumble and glass prisons break.

So much we hold falls away like the tide,
We cover our tracks in one simple stride.
Close up is clear but the lines become blurry,
There’s only one judge and there isn’t a jury.
The evidence is obvious, the lies unravel;
The verdict is guilty, as eyes watch the gavel.

Outside, the border between prison and free;
A number assigned, a lock without key.
A mother forgot, a father disowned,
A little boy cried, a grown man got stoned.
Perhaps this place is best just forgotten –
It’s full overflowing with rotting and rotten.

The chaplain read words from a big sombre book,
But no one was listening, no one bothered to look.
The inmates bickered, the guards lit a smoke
While they laughed off the pain in a crude old joke.
The coffin was heavy when laid in the ground,
Sun-washed lawns spread smooth all around.
The daisies have wilted, the seasons have flown,
Cold as the frost on pillars of stone.
