Flash fiction piece for a contest
The following are excerpts from the journal of Sergeant Martin Gayhart found in the ruins of a building near Revere.

They came out of nowhere.  No one seems to be able to tell us where these winged creatures are coming from.  All I know is that the sky was clear one day and filled with death and destruction the next.  Rumor has it that they first started attacking us after some fighters tried to shoot one down.  After that, well, here we are trying to keep alive while hunting them down.

Happy Birthday to me, my entire squad and part of another were wiped out trying to take out a big green lizard down in Chelsea this morning.  We thought we had the drop on it but obviously they are not the stupid reptiles we thought them to be.  Thing seemed to be asleep and we got cocky.  Medics say my arm burns will heal.  Can’t bear to drink the beer the guys had stashed for a bash tonight.

Something happened that was very odd today.  I couldn’t get past that green lizard taking out Mike, Buzz, and that kid … can’t even think of his name now.  So I packed up a few explosives and headed to the building where it all happened.  I figured I had nothing to lose trying to get some pay back for my buddies and if nothing else maybe I’d see them on the other side.  As I worked my way in I heard this mewling sound, like something in pain.  It took me some time to track it down and what did I find?  A small brown dragon trapped in a crevice in the floor of this building.  Wasn’t what I’d call cute but I couldn’t bring myself to shoot it either.  It took some doing, along with a few scratches before I managed to get the little guy out.  That’s when I felt the hot wind blow across my back.

I slowly turned around to look right into the face of my own nightmare, the green lizard.  I don’t know why it didn’t kill me immediately.  Then the creature I was holding started struggling to get free, and I set it gently on the ground.  The dragon, might as well call a spade a spade, just looked at me, then the smaller version.  As the baby scrambled toward… well I guess Mom... the look the dragon gave me, it was... well you could see the intelligence, the mind working, and ultimately I was allowed to leave unmolested.  I don’t get it.

The contents have not been verified as Sergeant Gayhart has not been located and is listed as AWOL.  The final entry states he could not stomach killing intelligent beings.  This journal was found with his uniform.  There have been reports that he has been observed near battle areas, removing traps.  These reports are unconfirmed.
