Sharing demons
Yesterday we sipped wine and spoke openly about our demons.
We slept alone, but were safe
No nightmares to fear.
You told me about that one holiday only your family celebrates.
It's a holiday that doesn't exist for any other home.
We drank evenly over a night of hours
The sun began rising as we said our goodbyes.
I walked you across the tall grass
Mildew sticking to our skin
Then you walked me just right back
In an attempt to return the favor.
We did that for another hour
Until the lightening bugs disappeared and the crickets ceased their chirping
Until the sun was at it's brightest
And we had to shield our eyes to walk.
I took your secret with me as I finally trudged back through the grass.
My skin itched with every step
The sun freckled my complexion
And I promised to always celebrate your holiday, but never let you know.
