Chapter 1

WOW! Who would have thought I would be back home in Texas, after being gone for so long? My mother called and said that she had taken ill. So, I took a leave of absence from my job and jumped on the first flight out of Miami. I left the small Texas town I grew up in when I was 19. I graduated from high school and went to college for a couple of years. I knew deep down inside I would not be in Texas forever. I set my sights on Miami to explore bigger and better opportunities. After many attempts I landed a job in Miami. I am now 25 years old and headed back to Texas to take care of my mother.

When I was 19, my mom was not happy with my decision to leave home at first. Growing up it was always just mom and me. She raised me by herself and I love her dearly for that. But, I felt that my time in Texas was coming to an end. I got resume' together and went on a major job hunt in Miami. I was sending out resume´s and applications galore. It seemed as the more I sent out, the more rejection letters I would get. I never gave up I kept the faith. I kept putting my name out there. I was determined to leave Texas. I was ready to let go of some old memories and create some new memories. It was all just a matter of time. Let me give you the background of how my departure from Texas took place...

Just when I thought that it would never happen. I was sitting in my bedroom at my mom's house at the age of 19. The phone rang and I heard my mom call my name from the other room. "Destiny, the phone is for you baby". I had no clue what was about to happen. I went to answer the phone. "Hello", the very strong male voice on the other end said, "Is this Destiny Mitchell"? I replied with a confused "yes, this is Destiny Mitchell". The male voice went on to explain that he was the human resources manager for one of the celebrity stylist agencies I applied for. The lump in my throat grew bigger as he continued to talk. "Destiny, my name is John Daniels. I was very impressed with your resume'. I would like to get you out here to Miami for an interview". The excitement began to build inside of me. I answered with a quick, "sure that would be no problem". Mr. Daniels went on to say that he would make arrangements and have his assistant contact me back in a few days with all the details. I was so excited, I yelled "Thank you Mr. Daniels! Thank you!" With a quick chuckle and a few last words he ended the call.

I was relieved to get the call and excited about the trip. But, now I must break the news to my mother. Her only daughter will possibly be leaving home at 19 years old. How would she respond? I went into my mom's room and took a seat at the edge of her bed. Mom was getting ready to go to the kitchen to start dinner. I smiled at how beautiful mom is. In a quiet and unsure voice, I said, "Mom can I talk to you for a second"? Mom took a seat beside me and said, "Yes sweetheart you sure can". I took a deep breath and began by saying, "mom that call was for a job that I applied for in Miami". My mother just sat there staring at me as if I had told her someone had died. I know her heart was broken. I had to think of a way to make her understand why I decided to make this move. "Mom, I love you dearly. But, I think it is time for me to move forward with the goals and dreams I have in my life". As I continue to explain I could see the tears forming in my mother's eyes. "Mom, please understand that this has nothing to do with you or anything that you have done." "I just have so many dreams and goals that I want to pursue, mom...please understand."

Mom sat on the bed a little while longer just looking into my eyes. Deep down inside I was hoping she was understanding what I was saying to her. I leaned over to give mom a hug. She stopped me and said, "Destiny, I really wish that you would stay here and live out your dreams and goals. But, I know you must do what you feel is best for you. I do not want to stop you from any of that. I love you and I am behind you 100%". After hearing those words I knew mom was still not happy, but she supported me. We hugged each other and mom kissed me on my forehead. These are the moments I will forever cherish with my mom. After all in my book she is the best. "Now, let me get in the kitchen and get dinner started", mom said as she stood up.

I went to my room to gather myself before I ate dinner with mom. I stood in my mirror wondering what was about to happen with all of this. I began to daydream about life and living in Miami. If it was all that I was imaginin, then I was ready to make that move. I was suddenly startled by the sound of my mom's voice, "Destiny, dinner is ready." I heard her calling crom the kitchen. I gave her a quick, "ok mom...here I come." Gather myself and headed to the kitchen.
