Clan war, was it worth it. Short, short story.

                                          Little Cabin in the Woods

The war with the Calibries was over.

As I rose to my knees and then staggered to my feet I looked out on the battlefield.

Through blurred vision it looked like a field of boulders.

I knew it wasn't boulders, but bodies scattered all over.

We had won. "Alas, but at what price?"

Only a few of us were left.

I reached down to pick up my sword and almost passed out.

Must be from the blow I took from the Mace to my head.

The blood running into my eyes from the wound blurring my vision or I have a concussion.

I used the sword as a crutch to get my balance.

What a waste, what a waste, I thought, as we that were left, staggered off in different directions.

Home.

That was where we was going, each to his own home.

After hours that seemed like days, I came to the creek that I would cross to the path that leads through the woods up to my home.

I stopped here to wash the blood from my head and from my eyes.

Weakened from the battle and not eaten in days, the little path up the little incline was like climbing a mountain.

Each step pained me but I was spurred on by familiar trees, mushroom patches and the sound the wind makes blowing through the trees.

There, there, up ahead I could see the well. Then the Cabin.

Blurred at first but as I got closer, a little clearer and clearer.

Voices. I heard voices and screams..

Screams of joy.

Screams coming from me and also from my wife and kids that came bursting through the front door.

A waste? It wasn't a waste to protect those I love.

And that little Cabin in the Woods.
