Preparing for a sermon can seem a lot like preparing for life.
This is the name of my day. My anxiety is about a ten today as I head toward the home stretch of sermon deliver in a week. I think part of this is due to it being the day before I will deliver my sermon next week. My stomach is in knots and my brain is mush. I started work at my security job a bit ago. A replacement came to the post. The mention was made of the replacement working with my coworker, meaning I was supposed to get the day off. Instead my coworker was sick and that meant chaos at the work site.
How will I deal with the anxiety?
1. I will meditate for a half hour each day, keeping in mind that the sermon is one among many other things that I prepare for in the course of a week.
2. I will work hard not to overwork my sermon. I keep preaching it over and over at work and it only makes me more anxious. I can be heard yelling in the parking lot. People must wonder if I am crazy. It is good I do this when everyone is in the building.
3. List what I can do to be ready.
4. Pray!! I will not make the sermon better by anything I do or say. I may never feel like I am ready. God is ready, just like so many of the other people I work with and for. All I need to do is show up and see what will happen from there.
5. I am thinking of a micro manage. I hope that thinking now will save me from overthinking later.
-get dressed in light tan pants and button down shirt.
-make sure I have gas to get there
-take my water bottle-the last time I preached I had dry mouth.
-take my bible and a note card with the verses I am using
-read the scripture for the day
-have a clear cut invitation at the end
-enjoy the moment.
-once done think that in those moments I did what I do in all my other jobs. I accomplished the task at hand and it is time to go home.
- but first get ready for a meal with the committee. It is a perk-savor it (the moment).
-God bless-you are going to do a great Job
