An attempt at ruba'i quatrains - may Fitzgerald forgive me!
MOVING ON

And shall my story once again take flight

To banish now the sullen gloom of night

So shall it be for those who come to know

That poesy may make the darkness light.

The storied dreams of all those many years

Shall underscore my passing hopes and fears

And make a montage of my loss and gain

To banish from my soul the futile tears

I stood there once upon the airy heights

To gaze into the future days and nights

Where joy and hope and youthful pleasure reigned

Then heedless of the bitter truths and plights

The past is done and now is cast in stone

For hurt and pain I’ve caused I must atone

The simple facts of time and place reveal

Responsibility is mine and mine alone

To shower the world with hatred and with pain

For some, a hope of paradise to gain.

Abjuring love as if some foul disease

Coating the land with an obsessive stain.

But turn to love, and hope and joy sublime

From out the pit of darkness we may climb

And make a future warm with friendship’s balm

By casting off the chains of former time.

A formula not writ in blood and strife

Provides a path to guide me through this life

And moving on towards the final gate

Escape the pain of evil’s savage knife

One final time I call upon the fates

To open up the pathway to the gates

And see us through the rocks, the traps, the snares

Towards the final challenge that awaits.

Be with me, love, together we shall be

Finding at last the long forgotten key

To solve our own reality in peace

That, at the end, permits us to be free.
