It's surprising what you can do when you're desperate.
Prompt:
The smell of roasting meat wafted out of the restaurant as he dug through the Dumpster in the back.

He glanced up at the sky.  Heavy clouds were forming, blocking out the last rays of the sun.  It was growing chilly.  He pulled up the collar of the thick flannel shirt and shivered. He rubbed his hands together in an attempt to warm them up.

Tonight he would sleep in the battered up old truck he’d left home in two years ago. He reserved shelters for bitterly cold nights in the winter. He had parked the truck in a secluded area just outside of town. Locked in the cab were his bedroll, a tarp, and his few possessions, including a gun, but so far, he hadn’t needed to use it.

The rain would soon be falling.  He was hungry and needed food to keep him going so he'd hike into town and find some. He grabbed a bag out of the truck and headed to the restaurant on the outskirts of town.  It was convenient and the stuff he found in the Dumpster was quite good, if you were hungry.

When he entered the parking lot of a couple on their way inside stared at him curiously.  He was used to that. He tried to keep himself respectable looking because he sometimes did odd jobs, hoping to save a bit of money for winter.  He could buy himself a meal or two or whatever he need most.

The smell of roasting meat wafted out of the restaurant as he dug through the Dumpster in the back. He had fished out some loaves of day old bread and a bag of carrots that still looked good.

He heard raised voices coming from inside the restaurant.  Someone was shouting that their meat was overdone.  The voices were getting louder, and someone moved towards the door. He quickly ducked down behind the Dumpster.

The door burst open, and the chef came outside.  “If the damn meats no good, then to hell with it!” he said angrily.  Plop, the meat landed in the Dumpster, and the chef slammed back into the restaurant.

He came out of his hiding place and quickly grabbed the hot roast and stuck it in his bag.  He smiled to himself as he started walking back to his truck.  Won’t have to worry about food for a couple of days, he thought happily.
