Epic/scope-creep writers uniting to brainstorm a contest idea.
This is an open forum for brainstorming a new contest idea. Feel free to pitch in if you have something to say. *Smile*

Here's the gist of the idea as I explained it to Jay's debut novel is out now! :

Storm Machine and I are thinking about another contest. I felt out reaction in scroll and got lukewarm, but no real epic/scope-creep writers there.

Storm ran a Zodiac contest, and each prompt included personality words like Leo: generous, dogmatic, roar, expansive, risk, faithful, lion, gold, ruby. I LOVED the contest and used it to develop characters. I found myself matching up the prompt with an under-developed character from my epic world and writing a background story centered around that character.

So we've been talking about running a similar contest, but specifically targeting world-building authors looking for motivation and useful prompts for building worlds through the use of backstory. The prompts would all be designed to help build characters and settings. We were talking about ongoing, so if you're working on world building and want some prompts and prizes, you could bop in and enter a few rounds. Making it backstory instead of general profiles and lists (1) keeps your fiction craft honed, and (2) makes them readable for judges. Basically, you'd be building your own Silmarillion, only maybe better, because the stories are written to be competitive.

But based on lukewarm response in scroll, not sure how successful it will be, and I don't want to invest time and energy into promotion. So maybe we'd run it on some kind of schedule, like a couple times a year for a fixed period of time.

Please share your thoughts and ideas.
