There is something strange about the hills where no one dares to go.
There's a spot in the North where no man ventures
for the dark nights are filled with strange adventures.
Those moonless nights bring out fear in the men
when ghostly cries of a woman are heard again.

Many years ago, an old woman lived there alone.
She had made the old cabin in the woods her home.
She planted a garden and made the best of her lot,
waiting for Spring to come, the cold she soon forgot.

Smoke came from the chimney, the fireplace blazed,
and the cabin was cleaned, she was quite amazed
at the huge difference a bit of soap and water made.
She read her Bible by candlelight, she was unafraid.

As the snow melted from the hills, she was secure,
knew she could walk to the pond, pristine and pure.
She would gather berries and wildflowers on the way,
watching for deer and rabbits that scurried at play.

Then the sky turned black, rain began to pour down.
She turned back toward the cabin, heard the sound
of growling and she saw movement in the underbrush
and the beast lunged at her, her frail body to crush.

Her screams echoed through the hills as the beast
tore at her bloody body and it would never cease
until the screaming stopped and she lay quite still.
Her last thoughts were "My Lord, do thy Holy will".

The beast, now satisfied, went its way to the wood.
Through the pouring rain, the ghostly figure stood.
It began to scream hard enough to wake the dead
and from the unholy screams, the beast soon fled..

From time to time, when hunters go to the hills,
they hear the screams and with fear in them fills.
They saw the eyes of the beast watching nearby.
They left in a hurry, afraid and unprepared to die.

There is a spot up North where no man ventures,
No one searches the silent hills for adventures.
The old woman's soul has not found eternal rest,
She walks the hills at night in such a futile quest.

She mourns the passing of her life, once so good
and seeks revenge on the beast living in the wood.
The beast is now dead, no more will it terrorize,
The smell of death and decay shows in her eyes.
