Things were so much better back then...or were they?
Oh for the good ole days
When men were men and women were women

When children were beaten instead of disciplined
When blacks couldn’t vote
And Jews and Italians were kikes and wops

And things were good so long as “those people”
Stayed on their side of the tracks

Yes, things were so much better back then
Marriages lasted longer
because divorce wasn’t an option

Mr. Johnson down the street beats his wife every night
But Mrs. Johnson’s family tells her to stay and “make it work”

Teenage pregnancy was just as common back then
Only the poor girl had to give the baby up for adoption
Or was shot gunned into marriage

Yes, those where the good old days when rape and incest happened
But “shhhh” you just didn’t talk about it

Disabled children were institutionalized
And being gay was just a mental illness

PTSD didn’t exist and soldiers came home to
Gamble or drink away their money

Today will someday be the good ole days
So slow down and take off your glasses made of rose

And then try to tell me
It really was better back then.
