contest entry for daily flash

Alice walked down the stark white hallway toward the directors' office. She hesitated for an instant and then opened the door.

Charles Adams, the director of research, had too little time for his crushing work load so interruptions were especially unwelcome. His wrinkled forehead telegraphed displeasure to Alice as she entered his office.

“Mr. Adams. I know what you're going to say.” She paused.

Charles' right eyebrow lifted. “Please continue Alice, I'm curious as to what I'm about to say as well.”

“This latest genetic trial. It isn't a mistake to be destroyed. Its a marvel to be unraveled. They are more intelligent predators than expected. But intelligence and was the idea behind militarization in the first place.”

“Yes, and the replication factor?”

“No, they weren't supposed to be self replicating. But perhaps we can spin that as an advantage to the military as well.”

“The replication factor makes them a danger once used in an uncontrolled environment Alice. There is no way to control the population if any one of them break protocol.”

Alice tiled her head to the side in disbelief. “Really? The doom and gloom numbers from Risk Assessment are pure fiction.”

Charles stood up to more forcefully address the issue when the phone rang. He stopped and chatted for a few seconds then hung up. “Well Alice. I suppose we will see about the numbers. They've escaped!”
