A small block poem that I wrote for a class of mine.
This wall keep us all safe, keeping out the unwanted and the damaged. The wall keeps us away from those who wish to harm or mislead us. The wall is as thick as we want and as tall as we can manage but only goes so far. The wall makes us clam so we make more and more, keeping those who are outside none the wiser as to what happens behind it. Alone we are lock behind the walls that keeps us so safe but unease stirs in the people who have been lock in and want to see what is really on the outside. They break small cracks in the walls to see the outside. They see the people still waiting for the walls to come down and let them know what happens with in the walls that keep us so safe. Larger and larger the holes get until they are able to fit through and leave the walls that held them. They leave for a while but they eventually return to the walls to share the lessons they have learned with the people who are still there. They speak of the sunlight and the friends they wish to return to on the outside. More and more people leave through the holes and more and more stories and told by those who leave. The stories of old that once built the walls soon fade to all but who built to them and the people begin to leave. One by one they walk out into the world beyond the walls and soon only two are left. The one who built the walls and the one who first saw the outside. The one who left ask the one who built the walls to come and see the outside but the memories of the past still stay strong. The one who left says the world beyond the wall is different but the one who made the walls still believes the walls will protect him from the pain he once had. The one who left tells him the wall only keeps out those who wish to help but the one who built the walls tells him the walls keep the pain away. The one who built the walls asks the one who left to leave once more and never return to the walls that keep us so safe. The one who left says he will leave but once he is gone there will be no one left but him. The one who left walks away saying that he will return to the walls waiting for them to crumble and let them see the beauty of the world together.
