A poem about a girl trapped in a broken family.
Ashes

Counting every second in the flickering light

Hot emotion boiling inside

Bottles clinking, desperate eyes

Childhood ended, innocence died

Every board of the straining house

Saturated with groaning pain

Her voice like a snake slurring downstairs

His crooked grin of careless denial

Her final words slipped out that night

Laden with scars of the last five years

In the candlelight she trembled faintly

Twisted victory smiling clear

Burn every board, leave nothing here

Shatter every bottle, boil her poison to the air

Rip the grin from his lips with flames

Let them forget us like a nameless grave

There's not enough joy in all the world

To cover up the pain inside that house

There's not enough water in a thousand wells

To wash the hurt from their hearts now

She lit the match and threw it down

Ending the torment with a fiery yell

Rage embraces delirious laughter

The family forever without a name

Photographs of before the fall

Slowly eaten piece by piece

Burn it all, the girl whispered

Erase us like a deadly mistake

Every happy flash, every glance of hope

Every disappointment, every bitter note

Consume it all, wipe it all away

Leave a black spot on the ground

Ashes, ashes, we all fall down
