In a world without guns...
"Time's running out," snarled a gruff voice, "and there's still half of a thousand dollars of debt racking up." The man kept a stern face as he stared at the bruised chin of the other man across the table.
"I'll get you your money," replied the bruised man, rubbing his left arm, "but it's going to take a bit of time. Money's pretty sparse this time of year."
"Then I guess that means you'll have to search harder." The gruff man pulled out a cigarette and offered it to the bruised man.
"I don't smoke. That stuff will kill your lungs," the bruised man said.
The gruff man grunted and lit the cigarette for himself. "Look Tony, I know you. You're a good man. We've had a lot of good times in the past..." the gruff man trailed off, lost in nostalgia. He let out a puff of smoke and buried the cigarette in an ash tray. "How's the wife?"
"She's fine," Tony said, tightening the bandages around his fists.
"Good to hear. What about that little brunet haired daughter of yours, Evelynne?" the gruff man asked, leaning back in his grey folding chair.
"Good as well. School's going pretty easy for her, but she's having a bit of trouble getting down the use of the bo staff."
"She excel with anything else? A nice katana, or perhaps even a naginada?" asked the gruff man, adjusting his navy blue fedora.
"We aren't letting her practice with a blade yet. She might hurt herself or someone else. You know that it's not recommended until she turns 10," Tony explained.
"That's right, it would be a shame if someone or something hurt her," the gruff man stated, wiping down a knife to a glistening shine.
"What's that supposed to mean, Devon?" Tony asked, readying himself to make a fist as a moment's notice.
"I'm just saying, Tony," Devon said with a chuckle, "I'd hate to see something happen to Evelynne."
"Where's this going?" Tony asked, gripping the edge of the table, his eyes narrowed on Devon.
Devon smirked and glared menacingly at Tony. "I'm about to make you an offer you can't refuse."
"And what if I do?" Tony asked, keeping a stern demeanor.
"Try me and find out what happens," Devon said, grinning and looking at Tony from under the brim of his hat.
Tony slammed his fists on the table and stood up, snarling, "I have just about half a mind right now to strangle you to death."
As he did, two goons from behind Devon pulled out their weapons, one holding a knife and the other a pair of kunais, and aimed it at Tony's throats. "I'd watch where your stepping right now, Tony," Devon said calmly. "I'd hate to have to see heads roll, but-" Devon quickly snapped his fingers and two more goons came out from the shadows behind Tony, restraining him and tying him down to the chair, "you've forced my hand."
"What are you up to, you damn kingpin?" Tony yelled, struggling to get out of the rope restraints, but his years of martial arts were no match for the bonds that held him. Devon stood up and placed a remote in Tony's left hand.
"Here's the offer. On that remote I gave you, there's two buttons. The left one lights up a red light, and the other lights up a green light. Now, over there," Devon said, turning Tony and his chair to face a blacked out sheet of glass, "is some random person, who you may or may not know. If you light up the red light, Marly here," Devon said, patting a thin but stern looking woman on the shoulder, "will kill you. However, if you light up the green light, the other person will die. Also, if you get any bright ideas about trying to avoid her toss, you can just forget about it," Devon chuckled. As if on cue, Marly pulled out a throwing spike from her hair and sent it sailing across the building, landing cleanly on a small X scratched into the concrete wall.
Tony felt around the remote for the two buttons, being careful not to hit either. He pondered the pros and cons over and over in his head. He didn't want to die, but he didn't want another potentially innocent victim to be added to Devon's kill list. Devon was a ruthless and cold-blooded tyrant who ran the town. His weapons were top-notch and no ordinary weapons bought at the stores could stand up to his, forged from the strongest metals available. It's been about seven years now since Devon and his ruthless gang moved into Tony's small town. Tony sighed and pushed a button.
He heard a buzzer go off and Marly take her stance to throw a spike. The sound of the spike as it whizzed through the air pierced the silence that permeated the warehouse. Tony closed his eyes as the sound of glass shattering echoed in his mind as it happened. Bones cracked and a loud thud of something rather small hitting the ground. Tony's mind raced at the thoughts of who was behind the sheet of glass, but before he could think further, the sound of large footsteps approaching shook him from his thoughts. Tony opened his eyes and saw Devon standing there with a large tire iron held over his shoulder.
"Good choice."
That was the last thing Tony could remember before he blacked out. As Tony's eyes fluttered open, he found that his hands and feet were no longer bound. He struggled to regain consciousness and stand up, his arms shaking uncontrollably. Devon and his gang was gone and the smell of blood lingered in the air. Tony finally stood up and began to hobble over to the source of the scent. He must have been out for hours, as he saw the sun setting across the horizon. He walked over the other Marly had killed and fell to his feet. A sole word escaped his lips as he saw the brunet hair of a young girl, less than 10 years old.
"Evelynne..."
