a reason I knit
I love seeing yarn
looped horizontally
across knitting needles,
to feeling it pass,
so smooth,
so strong,
through the fingers
and turn into a web—
each piece unique
as the time and knitter
who created it.

knitting is a knot.
one enormous knot
as bit as the pattern
and imagination
can make it.
one pull in a right place,
and it will unravel,
running down in ladders
that break the pattern—
leaving only destruction.

in a project bag,
I play with shades of pink yarn
and ladders,
dropping intentional stitches
to make a cabled shawl
as light as lace,
and whenever I come
to a place to drop a stitch,
I blush, and look around,
too bashful to let it fall
where anyone can see,
but filled with glee
to see the pattern form
from something I feel
I shouldn’t do.
