Flying High

I never know
who will rise -
like truest cream, like dew on wildflower, or
like a kite catching first breath of wind to spiral high.

I never know
who will falter -
wobbly first bike ride, forgotten words to solo sung,
or missed cue on opening night.

I never know
who will regroup, dig in, or
push their limits.

I never know who will shine, or be consistent
or knock it out of the park
one day, strike out the next.

I do know
each has a moment.
I do know someone will always
catch me off guard
and surprise the living hell out of me.

I live for the stellar rises,
unexpected nailing of a prompt,
watching that note soar as words
mesh to create a symphony of sound.

I live for that sound
of a shattering shell as someone
breaks out of rut or mold
and exceeds their own expectations,
when their flare sparks something within them
and it shows, oh how it shows
in their entry!

I love being caught off guard
and it reminds me that I do this
for so many reasons. But mostly,
for each of you.

By far the
most important:
if I can give you one additional tool
for your arsenal, give you one more
trick to try...
then I, in some minute way,
have helped you fly!
