April second is payback day.

I sharpen my anger
with the whetstone
of revenge,
I hone my resolve
with the strop
of reciprocity.
You deviled me,
yesterday,
with April Fool’s prank,
you grinned mean
and laughed light-headed
when I found oatmeal
in my New Balance shoes.
Yet now I am feldspar
of equal pay, of my right
for counterstroke,
for quid pro quo--
today the joke is on you.
Today, the second of April,
is the day for robust reprisal,
for passing skunks
in potpourri,
for melted wax
on Matchbox cars.
I wet my lips,
wag my tail, inhale
a scent of joyous balm
and plan like paranoia
fixed...ah yes, it is
my turn.
