when a relationship changes
Looking back,
On what we had,
I see a thousand images
and have a thousand thoughts.

Comparing then and now,
even though the now is good,
I miss the then.

It isn't the grand things
that make me look back.
The gifts aren't what I long for.
Neither the elaborate outings, nor the
long speeches of devotion
can send my heart running to the past.

It was the little things.
A glance you once gave,
a whispery kiss given as a symbol
of undying love, or
a simple hug made perfect
by a quiet "I love you,"
are what make me yearn for
what used to be.

For our love isn't one big thing.
It is the cultivation of the little things
into something that could last forever.
