Poem I wrote to my husband

Leaving
---'-----------------

It was so easy for you - this leaving,
This simple leaving.
The slide of hazel eyes toward
Some unknown mark,
An unsteady sacrifice.
Rain-slick ground giving way
To something mournful from the
Depths of the earth -
Sanctified suffering.
The whisper of damp cloth
Against my hands,
A clumsy, flailing attempt
To hold back that hot flood.
A hum, low and steady,
Vibration cutting through
Damp, still air - a wild,
Untamed thing.
The sea shifts in sleep.
There is a softness to it,
A simplicity we don't
Begin to understand.
All this caught in your sigh -
Your last lovely sigh.
