 The real witches  (E)
This is a contest entry for Pond Poetry, November 2016.
#2103420 by Chris Breva

The girls were a troublesome lot
The trouble they brought was death
It was simply attention they sought
Many paid the price with their dying breath.

The girls accused them of being witches
This was far from being the truth
They were simply a bunch of young .......
They were sewing the seeds of youth.

It mattered not the nature of their crimes
They enjoyed the attention and fame
Witchcraft was a superstition of the times
They used it as part of their game.

So many died as a result of their actions
Yet not a one ever uttered retractions.
