Swings

With memories of swinging
in the backyard... back and forth
When chains were bright and gleaming
with links forged in the north
Links of shining silver
Feet never touched ground
The compass points bewilder
as the seasons roll around
With weathercocks set spinning
and wind chimes marking days
The races we were winning
Blurred with losses in a haze
A hazy shade of summer
In a rose hued maze of youth
Time proves the greatest runner
Whilst age unveils truth
With all that time spent swinging
Legs carefree though the air
A carefree bird just winging
On someone else's prayers
Someone safe and grounded
Someone standing guard
With hopes and fears founded
and feet firm rooted hard
Pushing us when prompted
“Faster” was our cry
The shiny things we wanted
Whilst dull needs passed us by
Yet as our shadows lengthen
Our feet start scraping ground
Different rides warrant attention
With fresh perspectives found
With new adventures taken
Swings left vacant in the breeze
Some playgrounds are forsaken
As the Summer starts it's freeze
The seasons start their dances
Each with their own test
We don't know all the answers
We just want what is best
With silhouettes behind us
We venture bravely on
We hope the right things find us
They're never really gone
Always on horizons
Always there on call
Always have their eyes on
Those silhouettes stand tall
But chains, they will get rusty
Links, they will get old
Books get worn and dusty
and tales will be told
By the compass points we visit
East, West, North and South
Directions inexplicit
Followed, word of mouth
With memories still swinging
