excerpt from a novel I'm currently working on
The air was cold. He could feel the heavy crunch his feet made on the snow crystals beneath himno every step he took. Winter was finally here, and the thought of it filled him with an intriguing, new kind of excitement, What have I done? What have I done? What have I done? He kept muttering to himself as he hauled the heavy body deep into the woods. The sky above would’ve been completely pitch black, but the moon shyly peeked behind a dense mass of clouds, making the trees all around him come to life in the pale silver light. The worst part were their faces. Twisted and macabre things they were, smirking down on him, jeering and mocking his every step. He was afraid of them, he was terrified but he had no choice but to keep walking deeper and deeper into the woods. Deeper and deeper into the phantasmagoric demon court that surrounded him he went. He had no choice. The man in the black trenchcoat had told him to go there after completing his task.

He reached a small clearing by a frozen stream after what seemed like hours of carrying the girl. She’s heavy. She never felt so heavy. For a small second, doubt flooded his mind. He was suddenly overwhelmed by a feeling he knew too well...guilt. He laid her on the cold ground, and he started to remember. He could see the moment in which he first met her, he could recall that painful but oh so sweet knot in his gut every time they would talk; he could still hear her laughter, her melodic voice and he could still gaze into her warm brown eyes. Those eyes used to be so full of life, of hope, of happiness. Now he looked back into them and found nothing but piercing emptiness, nothing but hatred. Was that possible? How can a corpse feel such thing? No, it was ridiculous, surely his mind was playing tricks on him...right? She kept staring at him, her cold eyes were still fixed on him.

“I’m s-s-s-orry” He muttered. The cold wind was piercing him like a knife, freezing his voice. He tried to apologize but it was no good, the girl was still staring at him, “I’m sorry” He said, a little louder than the last time. It still did no good. He took out a knife from inside his coat and carved out her eyes as he screamed at the top of his lungs “I SAID I’M SORRY YOU STUPID BITCH!” He fell to his knees and started sobbing. “I never wanted this, I never meant to hurt you. I told you to let me be, I warned you a thousand times and you wouldn’t listen...you brought this on yourself, my love”

Now, now. Get on your feet and bury the bitch. It was a dumb move to scream like that, someone could’ve heard you, Spoke the man in the black trench coat, You can sit and weep like a little beaten dog later when this is all over, we still have much more work to do. Be brave, you have done well this time.

“Yes sir” He started digging his hands into the dirt again and again.

It took long but after he covered the body he felt much better. He wasn’t tired no more, he didn’t even feel scared or sad or even guilty. For the first time, he was confident, he felt stronger. Aroused by his own new strength, he took a deep, long breath. The air didn’t even feel cold anymore. No, the man in the black trench coat said he did well, now he was filled by a new fire and determination. He was hopeful. The demons all around him gazed at him in the pale, silver moonlight; but he didn’t care. “I am your king now” He smiled and walked away.
