Arundhati Roy (Indian Novelist)

modern hero, i love to love you
that voice, ever youthful
beautiful product of India
unable to embrace India
more than my jaded self, I weep for me

she forgets how western caste
made me an outcaste
after my apartheid horror story
will she ever balance her hearts
torn between India she loves and hates

She cares for the poor, those dispossessed
the marginalized, people taking on borders
like fences, to fence themselves in
in India, she finds terrifying

she cannot love Gandhi, no mahatma
in her eyes, his writing is exposed
minus his struggle, rejection of caste
in her Ministry of Utmost Happiness
because Gandhi had to have perfect views on everything
race, caste, class, Britain, South Africa ...
while Lincoln, Washington, and Jefferson are as clean as Trump!
