A haunted house bedtime tale ... A "Spirits at Lighthouse Poetry Entry"
The House On The Hill

Gather 'round children, I'll tell you a tale
'bout the old house at the top of the hill.
Peek out the window, don't cower and quail;
one look can't do harm ... but two just might kill!

Did you see a glow in the window above?
That's where the ghost of Rebecca abides.
It's said she killed not from hate but from love.
Somewhere the hearts of her family she hides.

They say it began with a misplaced charm;
a pearl handed down through generations.
It kept them protected, free from all harm,
fighting evil with evil through its emanations.

Then one stormy night, not too diff'rent from this,
an evil crept in and corrupted her soul.
The wind in the trees made an evil hiss
that covered the screams as she lost control.

It was her husband she first came upon.
She saved him, she said, by slitting his throat
for he was infected by evil's spawn.
Written in gore, she explained in a note.

Next came the children, dispatched one by one,
each with their hearts removed, hidden away.
The carnage continued 'til she was done.
It's said she stands guard to this very day.

On nights like this, as the storm clouds appear
and the wind sounds like a poor lost child's plea,
Rebecca prowls softly so you can't hear
hoping to add you to her family!

Beware, for a glow in the dark late at night
heralds her searching, for she isn't through.
She's seeking young children, so don't sleep too tight
or the next one she finds just might be YOU!

The story is done, the kids tucked in bed
while visions of horror in their minds race.
I creep down the hall not to soothe, but instead
I place a light shining under my face!

Muuuuhaaaaahaaaaaa!
