This item describes Laura's refusal to get involved, and how she ultimately does
1) At first Laura does not want to get involved in what might be another dangerous encounter. She is just getting over last summer’s debacle with the dead guy handcuffed to the steering wheel of his submerged car. She just wants a normal, happy life with Chad now. She wants to believe this is a dog or some other animal.
2) These thoughts, though, are only fleeting when she starts to dig more at the sight where Bailey dug up the bone. She soon realizes this is much bigger than a family pet. She also finds fragments of clothing around the area, telling her it was a human, not some other large animal. She immediately calls Chad, both from a personal and professional level. He is with the Sheriff’s department. She needs an investigator before she does anything else.
3) Once Laura calls Chad, she can’t go back. In her mind, she needs to help solve this case, too. When it starts to involve Jed, however, she has her reservations. Jed has never talked much about the night his wife was killed. Laura knew it was a horrible car accident west of town, but she let Jed have his privacy in that matter when it became apparent he would not talk about it, even to her. As she and Chad start to investigate, Jed becomes cold toward her and eventually he becomes downright mean. Laura cannot understand why, but Jed tells her to just let it go. No good could come of looking into it further, he said. Laura will eventually find out Jed was threatened if he should tell anyone what he knew or reveal anything that would reopen the case of the car accident. As far as the county was concerned, they got their man – and he killed himself awaiting trial. That was all they wanted to come to light. Too many influential families were involved in the truth to bring it back up.
