Homemade Gun Solvent

It is essential to keep your firearm clean and well lubricated. For the sake of safety clean your gun when you first buy it to clean away the manufacturer's dirt. You must give your gun a thorough cleaning after each use. Even if you take it out but do not get the opportunity to take a shot, your gun has been out in the elements and will need to be cleaned. If your gun has been in storage between seasons, clean it thoroughly before your first hunt of the season. A clean firearm is safe firearm.

I have found that solvent can be costly, though worth it. But, there is a less costly alternative that is just as effective as solvent you buy. An it only included three ingredients.

Safety During Make the Solvent

As always, safety first. Make sure the room in which you prepare the solvent is well ventilated. Wear rubber gloves that are rated for chemical use and safety goggles. Keep the solvent away from heat sources and in a chemically safe container. A rated gas can could be useful here.

Ingredients

1)1 part Dexron Automatic Transmission Fluid GM Spec D20265
2)1 part K1 Kerosene-low odor if possible
3)1 part Aliphatic Mineral Spirits

There are variations on this recipe, but this is the main recipe.

What To Do

Use a clean, chemical-resistent metal bucket to mix the ingredients. Add the Automatic Transmission Fluid first. Use the empty ATF container to measure out the rest of the ingredients. Fill the ATF container with the kerosene and add to the metal bucket. Then fill the ATF container with the Aliphatic Mineral Spirits and add to the mixture.

Stir the mixture in the metal bucket until it is completely combined.

As with all chemicals keep it safely out of the reach of children.
