... for the times when life doesn't play ball
Dog Days

Cowering through dog days
With tails hanging low
Chasing cars in long plays
… we wouldn't even know

What to do with, should we catch them,
Cars coveted that pass
Counting chickens 'fore we hatch them
Chasing tails through the grass

With chocolate left on top shelves
Out of reach, by family... friends
Finding novel ways to harm ourselves
… vetting others for the mend

With messages delivered
Strange people to the door
Anticipation quivered
Chewing letters up, and more

With correspondence chomped on,
and messages left mauled
We wonder where the love's gone
Waiting to be called

Left out in the garden
Life's mindless game of fetch
Begging for a pardon
Such dog years slowly stretch

Out beyond the picket fence
Avenues we knew
Through hedgerows, which were once less dense
Sometimes we break on through

We find that car to chase around,
the block, until it's slowed
At traffic lights, warn red, its found
Stopped still, found in the road

Ripe and for the taking
Yet far too rich, too grand
With barking fits we're making
We try to make our stand

Hoping that the bluff pays
Preying that it runs
Paddling through dog days
Canine style's how its done
