Assignment from Take Ten For Writers by Bonnie Neubauer I chose the number 1
I was in a dark place. Suddenly, there was light. Everywhere. There were thousands of people standing around in lines. Some lines were only three people long, others were endless. I was the only person standing out of line. This made me nervous and so I tried to get into a line. I chose the closest, which only had five people in it. The guy in the back looked at me and frowned. I was in the wrong line. I knew it in the very pit of my stomach and so I took a step backwards and looked around.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, the people broke out of their lines and began to mill about, talking softly, creating a buzz in the once silent land. I spun in a circle, but no one approached me. No one spoke to me. I felt completely alone and out of fashion. I was the outcast. I was the one that was left to question every move, every word, every look.

The light faded and soon it was dark again. I could see nothing but solid blackness. I gathered air in my lungs and released it in a sigh and I wondered if the light would come again, and when it did, if the outcome would be different.
