A contrasting poem about choosing whether or not to numb oneself
There is silence in noise;
A still murmur like the gurgle of a creek
Lapping and sloshing against the stones of a forest ground.
The underbrush crunches beneath your feet and for a moment it is loud:
Your breathing is loud,
The birds are loud,
The wind is loud,
Your thoughts are loud.
And yet, all I can consider is how silent it all really is.
Silence, indeed, is a choice.
