The Surprise

“Oh!” Maisy gasped. “I... I can’t believe this is happening,” she shook her head and blinked a few times to reaffirm what she saw. “Wow.”

A knock on the door snapped Maisy out of her disbelief. “You okay in there?”

“F-f-fine!” Maisy called back out, her voice wavering. “I wonder what Kyle’ll say about this,” she murmured. “Mom and Dad’ll die. I’m not even married yet!”

“’Kay. Hurry. I need to shave and shower before meeting my boss tonight.”

“Yeah! Don’t worry. I’ll be out in a bit.”

“Alright, sweetie. Can you be out in ten or so minutes?”

“Yeah! Yeah! No problem.” Maisy took a deep breath. “How am I going to tell him? And when? I don’t wanna ruin his dinner.... Maybe afterwards? But then I don’t know how long they’ll be out,” she reasoned, unlocking and opening the door.
She headed downstairs. “Hey, sweetie! When will you be back from dinner? Should I wait up?” Maisy tiptoed and pecked him on the cheek.

Kyle returned the affection. “I doubt we’ll be out later than eleven. What’s up? Is something wrong?”

“Ummm, nothing’s wrong, no.”

“We’re not breaking up, are we?”

“No! No, no, no. Nothing like that. I... just wanted to talk, that’s all.” Maisy laced and unlaced her fingers.

“If that’s the case, I can cancel dinner?”

“No! Go! I’ll be fine,” Maisy forced a smile. “Promise. Have a good time. Who knows, maybe you’ll be promoted!”

“Heh, right. Because promotions usually come with dinners, too,” Kyle laughed. “Knowing George, he probably wants to go over a case with me.”

“Well, you never know!” Maisy shrugged. Plus the extra money will help now that this has happened, she thought.

“Okay, sweetie. I’ll be back soon. Gonna go take that shower and shave so I look presentable tonight,” Kyle chuckled.
He headed upstairs.
“Maisy!” Kyle dashed back down with a box in his hand. “What is this? Are you...?”

Maisy nodded, tearing up. “I wanted to tell you but I didn’t know how.” She presented her test results with the two lines on it. “I’m pregnant,” she whispered, as he held her tight.
