A villanelle written from the viewpoint of a man in a challenging marriage.

The Juggling Act

Relationships are like a juggling act:
balls fly in graceful arcs but sometimes drop.
A husband learns to treat his wife with tact.

When things go wrong, he knows the odds are stacked
he'll get the blame because she's in a strop.
Relationships are like a juggling act.

She's sure her hunches are established fact
and so insists averse opinions stop.
A husband learns to treat his wife with tact.

If any girl made passing eye contact
his wife would surely see and blow her top.
Relationships are like a juggling act.

Although the neighbor's daughter's cute and racked
he must pretend her flirting is a flop.
A husband learns to treat his wife with tact.

Each day he runs the risk of getting smacked
and often fears his dainty bits she'll lop.
Relationships are like a juggling act;
a husband learns to treat his wife with tact.
