It's been a bit hot round our way recently
Sleepless

Another night above the covers
Another night long, lost
Lost without the lovers
We never count the cost

The cost of unspent actions
With fear in the heat
Prickled, losing traction
Pickled, patched in pleats

Sewn up by the seamstress
With spinnerets of time
Webs that somehow seemed less
When the sun, it didn't shine

Now thick, spun through the rafters
Silken in the night
With thoughts cocooned for afters
In the absence of some light

In darkness, hot and hungry
Between the sheets is stocked
Just too warm to get comfy
Where such delights dwell, locked

Locked between the bedsheets
In comfort, holding fast
Zones, where pride now competes
With ghosts, cold in the past

But heat, that just keeps rising
The mercury, it climbs
With reasoning surprising
Whilst alcohol, it rhymes

Discordant with the beating
Of hearts on different shores
Every night repeating
As darkness lengthens, draws

Stretching out and sifting
Shells shiny, spent, on show
The mind keeps slowly drifting
Places where it shouldn't go

It climbs in time with others
Tall ships at night, long crossed
With nights above the covers
… nights long... with lovers lost
