a Monday in Naples, Florida----a shell speaks to you
Monday Sunset

It was lowtide.
We came
for a salty sunset
or to catch
the elusive green flash.

I set you a quest.
"Bring me a pretty shell
from the water's edge".
My joints achy and heavy
I stayed fixed in my chair.

I hoped for treasure,
a left-hand whelk, a rare Junonia,
a shard of aqua beach glass.

You returned
bringing two tiny
matched coquinas.

Between our heart's
systole and diastole
there is a gap,
a grace note
that contains eternity.

I put the coquinas
to my ear and heard
the Guardian of Waters
whisper,
"You are loved."
