beginning to a short story fo two lovers recently engaged
I woke up this morning to bright, beautiful rays of sunshine beaming through to greet me with a stream of color and light. The alarm clock chirped cheerily as I reached over from my comfortable position to silence that charming bugger for the last time. What kind of day will it be today? Who will I meet? What will I see?

Random thoughts crossed through, moving along the warming pathways of mental processes waking up to a new day. I showered speedily, added a layer of color with a blue sweater overtop a floral dress, and skipped out into the real world to savor moments of unexpected excitement and generosity. My boyfriend, Matthew, met me at the local coffee shop in order to discuss plans for the day and partake in salty, savory breakfast sandwiches before we parted ways for work in the corporate industry.

“Good morning, Heather,” he said, greeting me with a smile and hug as we prepared to settle in for that blessed hour of companionship. “You seem all bright and cheery this morning.”

“I suppose. Today just seems like it’ll be a good day, ya know?”

All I could think about at that moment, aside from his gorgeous smile, was the song from the musical Singin in the Rain, “Good Morning.” Of course, I have my own lyrics to it.
         Good morning,
Good morning.
It’s great to stay up late.
Good morning, Good morning to you.
It’s morning,
It’s morning,
we’ve slept the whole night through.
Good morning, Good morning to you.

I almost missed the cue from Matthew that something was slightly off from normal. He was smiling but seemed slightly nervous. His thoughts concentrated elsewhere. Then, a song came on the coffee shop’s loudspeaker. It was interesting because the song was completely different from the shop’s normal jazz-inspired tunes. The song was “Hey Ho!” by The Lumineers.

Then Matthew got up and started dancing, for whatever reason. I mean, it’s a great song, with a good beat but that was kind of odd coming from him. Honestly, it’s more likely that I’d be the one getting up and jamming out to that song than he would. But hey, it was our song after all. It was the song that brought us together and it was the song that carried us through.

My favorite part of it is when the lyrics go “I belong with you, you belong with me in my sweet heart.” And maybe he remembered that.
At that part, he came back to me, smiling ear to ear. He pulled something out of his pocket and sank to the ground at my feet. Mind you, this was quite awkward since there were a lot of people around. But it was sweet. This was our place. This is where we went on our first date. And I guess this was where we were going to get engaged.

“Dearest Heather, I’ve found you to be such a wonderful…”

I kind of interrupted him then. “Oh get on with it. You needn’t be sappy or stereotypical over it, 😊” I said, smiling. “Yes, I’d marry you. Or you’d marry me. We’ll work that out when we come to it.”

He laughed. And put the ring on my finger. It wasn’t anything special. But it didn’t need to be. We were already connected before that ring appeared.

After that, we both left for work, renewed and reenergized for what we needed to do next.
