Some places you shouldn't swim
Waves

The nights stretch out before me
Bereft the Siren's song
With jagged teeth protruding
Lengthened, jutted, lean and long

In oceans once familiar
Once comfortable with tides
She rips in with the undertow
...She tears me up inside

The magic's always sought her
Sharks gather round in spells
With blood let in the water
Whilst treading on the shells

Left live or laying dormant
Some are short a pin
Sea beds strange, that torment
Mines twisted... turn within

We listen to the echoes
That resonate too loud
In solitude, in narrows
Born from breadth of crowds

From places that don't matter
From faces that don't count
As waves crash in and clatter
Surface tensioned up in doubt

I stumble through the currents
She doesn't know she's made
Rumbling through torrents
I tumble... lost, afraid

To break, to breach the surface
To face the tune so brave
To fake, a courage surplus
Beseeched, beached wrecked and saved

But safety has it's catches
It's place amidst the thrall
Locked behind life's latches
Drowning in the fall

Swimming for the lighthouse
Take on water as I go
… It tries to pull me under
Lessons eddied in the tow

With nerves whilst treading water
Reaching for the stars
A fear of going under
Sinking 'midst our scars

Scored amidst the tempests
That light upon the waves
Crashing heavy where we sleep
The quarters we enclave

Still drawn to Siren's singing
Never asking, never tasked
An answer never given,
… as the questions were not asked

Imagined from the outset
Memories I've never known
Searching for an outlet...
That place to be alone

So foreign in the water
Far from sure, and far from home
Stings to be without her.
… sometimes easier alone?

Easier yet hollow
No cargo in the hull
Easier to follow
Yet somehow, oh so dull

A ship without a keel
A right that feels wrong
A house without a wheel
A swan without a song

Charting where the tune goes
Mapping my Siren through the surf
Exhuming distant echoes
… for more than they are worth

Left blunted 'neath the ocean's,
muted water colour paints,
with currents housing notions
… beyond my own restraints
