The Cake

“I don’t like this,” Angela said.

Jeremy looked at Frank, “We’ve run out of choices,” he whispered. They both looked at the woman sitting at the tasting table.

Her wedding was all set, Goth as it turned out was not so hard to plan. The planner had arranged for the dark, the black, the everything Goth, and the couple was delighted. Regular food was fine, even Goth individuals eat regular food, albeit the choices for the wedding were dark colored in many cases, but regular food. The cake was another story.

A wedding cake is very personal to every bride. Jeremy and Frank knew this and they had never failed a bride...yet. They had the decorations and the shape set and approved. It was the flavor. They had given her samples of every cake they knew, this was the end of their list.

Suddenly Jeremy jumped, “One more!” he said, “I have an idea, will you give us one more try?” She agreed. They planned to have a tasting at five.

Jeremy shopped then locked himself in the kitchen. He wouldn’t even let Frank help. “It’s on me, works or not,” he said.

At five he brought out the new creation. A black cake, not so unusual, as they had tried two other cakes that were colored black and she rejected them. This one certainly smelled different.

The bride tasted it, Jeremy and Frank held their breath. Her eyes grew wide and a huge smile blossomed! She made her husband-to-be try it, then her mother and father. It was a winner!

After they left, Frank turned to Jeremy, “What did you do?”

Jeremy smiled, “I just took our plain old vanilla cake recipe, skipped the vanilla and added melted black licorice!”
