This is THE most commonly asked question I get from my QiGong and Tai Chi students.
People frequently ask us questions like "When should I practice QiGong?", "Should I practice QiGong first thing in the morning when I get up? Or at sunrise? Or should I do it at sunset? Or just before I got to bed?"

The answer is that all of those times have merit.

Sunrise (when the Yin of night gives way to the Yang of day) and sunset (when the Yang of day transitions to the Yin of night) are both good since they are both times of Yin and Yang energy visibly mixing with each other.

Similarly, doing QiGong first thing in the morning after you get up can be a nourishing and invigorating start to your day, while QiGong before bed can be a relaxing and calming end to a long, stressful day.

Other things to consider:

- geography and time of year: sunrise and/or sunset may happen at inopportune times, so using those events as practice times may not work. For example, if you live in a northern climate when sunset is around 4:00-4:30 PM during the Winter and that's when you're driving home in rush hour traffic, then obviously you can't use sunset as a regular practice time.
- your own constitution: are you a "morning person" or a "night person"? How engaged are your body and mind at different times during the day?

The answer to the question, "when should I practice QiGong?", lies with you. Don't be afraid to experiment with different times to find your best time. Once you find that time, stick to it, or at least as close as possible since that's when you will get the most benefit.

Do you have any questions about QiGong in general or about any of our courses (Therapeutic QiGong or QiGong for Emotional Balance)?

If you do, we would love to hear from you. Send your question(s) to Therapeutic.QiGong@shaw.ca
