“Susan, have you seen my water bottle?” Tom asked.

“No,” she answered, turning back to the dishes.

Just after she finished, he came back through. “Did you find your water bottle?”

“Yes, I’d left it on the table outside when I remembered I had coffee.” He handed her an empty coffee cup and a spoon. “Have you seen my notebook?” he asked now, “I had a list of all the things I needed.”

“I think it’s in the dining room.”

“Yes. I was looking for a pen to add that quarter inch gear I need to finish the clock.”

“What clock?”

“The mantle clock, of course.”

“You’re still fixing that? It’s been three years!”

“Things take time... I was researching clocks, so I’d get it right,” he answered.

“Sorry, I wasn’t thinking,” Susan said, hiding a giggle by turning back to the sink. “Where is that clock?”

It’s on the bench in the shop, or maybe in the garage... I’ll look,” off he went.

Two minutes later Susan’s phone rang, it was Tom. “I’m off to the hardware store, the clock is here, and I have my water bottle.”

“Great, I’ll see you when you get back.”

“Do you need anything, I can stop somewhere for you?”

“I can’t think of anything, if I do I’ll call you,” she answered.

“OK. Oh! Have you seen my phone? I can’t seem to find it, I thought it was in my pocket. Maybe in my other pocket.”

Susan looked out the window at her husband checking all his pockets for the phone he was talking to her on. Sometimes she wondered if all marriages were like this, or if she just got lucky. She got up to go out and laugh with her adorable husband as he found his phone.
